Who is Elsa?

Queen Elsa is a fictional character in the popular Disney film ‘Frozen’. Her character is based off of Hans Christian Andersen’s famous story ‘The Snow Queen’.

‘The Snow Queen’ is a fairytale that was published by Hans Christian Andersen in 1844. Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish author and is most famous for translating many Danish fairytales and for writing many of his own, including ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’.

Disney’s ‘Frozen’, although the storyline was very different from ‘The Snow Queen’, did capture many of the Scandinavian elements of Andersen’s native culture.

This dress, although it is not ‘historical’ at all, does capture themes of native Scandinavian costume with a twist. It is inspired by Elsa’s coronation dress from the film ‘Frozen’ and by other illustrations.
