| American Civil War Era: Circa 1840's-1870's | ||||||||
| The Civil War period was really the early Victorian period. Styles changed drastically between the Regency and Civil War period. Waistlines dropped, and corsets came back in style. During the 1840's, women wore heavy petticoats, but then hoopskirts came in style. Hoopskirts, or Crinolines, made dresses much easier and cooler to wear. Still, a lady wore many layers of clothing on an every day basis. First came a undershirt, or Chemise, a Corset, an under-petticoat, then the hoopskirt, an over-petticoat and finally the dress. It is easy to see how some women died of heat-stroke during the 1860's.
Work Dresses would have been worn to work around the house. Day Dresses were worn to go visiting, shopping or to church. |
