Girl's Clothes
Colonial Period: Circa 1750-1795
The Colonial Period is the time of the American Revolution. During this time, the most elegant styles came from the court of Marie Antoinnette in France. Clothing was elaborate and bulky. A lady's daily under-clothes consisted of a Chemise, or under-shirt, Stays, or a corset, a Petticoat and Panniers, or large side-hoops. The outer dress was known to weigh as much as 100 pounds. However, only the women of the court dressed this way. On a nomal day, a lady would have worn a much plainer outfit. Work Dresses were what would have been worn every day at home. Day Dresses would have been worn to church or to a casual social event. Ball Dresses would have been worn to a special party or by courtiers.
